Argentine FA HQ Evacuated After Bomb Threat; President Luis Segura Resigns

The Argentine FA "is in crisis and faces a possible suspension from FIFA, and events took a more sinister turn on Monday when the Viamonte HQ was targeted," according to Daniel Edwards of GOAL. The HQ of the AFA was evacuated on Monday "after receiving a bomb threat." The "sinister phone call led to AFA headquarters on Viamonte street being emptied as a precaution." The AFA currently faces "an institutional crisis." On Sunday, Judge María Servini de Cubría ordered investigators "to impede the entry of FIFA observers" and the creation of a normalization committee in the association. AFA President Luis Segura and "several other leading AFA figures are being investigated for the misappropriation of public funds through the Futbol para Todos program." The AFA is "likely to reject the FIFA designation of Damian Dupielliet as an interim chief while the crisis continues," and if the world governing body deems that this defiance "constitutes a breach" of its rules Argentina could face a suspension from int'l competition and "possible disaffiliation" (GOAL, 6/27).

SEGURA STEPS DOWN: CLARÍN reported Segura resigned on Monday. After he "had been removed from his position on Friday by FIFA but was later backed by de Cubría, he left his position running Argentine football." AFA sources said that Seguro presented a letter to administrative authorities and "will not return" to AFA HQ. With his resignation, Segura "backs the resolution FIFA announced on Friday." Segura had previously said multiple times in recent weeks, "If they believe that the best thing is a step to the side, my resignation is available" (CLARÍN, 6/27).
