BCCI To Go Ahead With Mini-Indian Premier League In U.S. In September

The Board of Control for Cricket in India "is going ahead" with the mini-Indian Premier League in the time window it got after Champions League T20 "was scrapped from the calendar," according to Nihal Koshie of the INDIAN EXPRESS. The U.S. is reportedly "one of the options to host the mini-IPL." The board said, "The BCCI has decided to host a truncated IPL every September starting from this year." Calling it the "mini-IPL" or "IPL overseas," BCCI President Anurag Thakur, after the board’s working committee meeting, said that the final dates and format "would be announced in due course." Thakur added that "not home and away matches but less number of matches in less than two-week window." An IPL governing council official said, "Space can be created on the cricket calendar because the T20 Champions League has been scrapped. We are proposing that all eight teams participate in the mini-IPL" (INDIAN EXPRESS, 6/24). ESPN's Nagraj Gollapudi reported a final approval "is contingent to various issues being sorted, including matters with the franchises and the broadcaster." According to a senior BCCI official, the idea to explore playing the IPL overseas "only came recently." It is understood the idea "emerged after a few franchises approached the BCCI seeking permission to play friendly matches" in the U.S. Sony owns the broadcasting rights for the IPL until '17, but it is understood that Star, which holds the rights for home series in India, "is a strong contender to bag the overseas IPL deal." Thakur: "More details can be shared once we speak to the various stakeholders. We'll speak to the franchises, to the broadcaster, and look at the revenue model before finalizing the dates and the format" (ESPN, 6/24).
