Liverpool Honoring Former Players With 'Men Who Built Anfield'

Liverpool legends will be "commemorated in the public space around the expanded Anfield stadium," according to Andy Kelly of the LIVERPOOL ECHO. A project called "The Men who Built Anfield" has been submitted to Liverpool council for planning permission. It involves the creation of "seven special granite benches, each inscribed with information on key players and events from the club’s history." The initial designs submitted to the local authority "include benches celebrating Billy Liddell, Elisha Scott, Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, Kenny Dalglish, John Barnes and Steven Gerrard -- though it is not known if these would be the final choices if the project proceeds." Fans could "also get the chance to create their own special part of the refurbished Anfield." The granite benches are part of a wider “fan personalisation” scheme which allows for supporters to "contribute to a new walkway created from granite stones." Fans would have "the chance to buy a personalised message which can be engraved on the stone, with different sizes available." Other stadiums have "used the idea of personalised stones or bricks including Goodison Park around the Dixie Dean statue, the new Wembley and Sunderland's Stadium of Light" (LIVERPOOL ECHO, 6/20).
