League Notes: Australian Sports Codes Sign Commitment To Gender Equality

A commitment "to gender equality and the pursuit to end violence against women by harnessing the power of sport was made on Friday as major codes signed the Our Watch Leadership Statement." Coming together in Melbourne, rugby, the Australian Football League, National Rugby League and Netball Australia "will work together with Our Watch to eliminate violence against women and their children by promoting women’s participation and opportunities, challenging gender stereotypes and roles, challenging violence supportive attitudes and behaviours and encouraging respectful, healthy and equal relationships on and off the field" (Sydney DAILY TELEGRAPH, 6/17).

India’s cricket tour of Zimbabwe was on Sunday "hit by a massive controversy after an official associated with one of the sponsors of the series was arrested for alleged rape even though he denied the charge." The storm erupted after the Zimbabwean media reported that "an unnamed Indian cricketer had been arrested on charges of rape." However, official sources in India "denied the report, stating that the person arrested was in fact affiliated to one of the sponsors of the ongoing limited-overs series" (PTI, 6/19).
