Eurosport Becomes First Pay-TV Channel To Secure Live Wimbledon Rights In U.K.

Eurosport has added tennis' crown jewel to its rights portfolio after signing a five-year deal with the All England Lawn Tennis Club. The pan-European sports broadcaster will show live simulcast coverage of  Wimbledon's singles finals -- both men and women -- in the U.K. The deal makes Eurosport the first pay-TV broadcaster to show live coverage from the All England Club in the U.K., a company spokesperson told SBD Global. Eurosport will also show a daily 90-minute highlights show over the course of the grand slam tournament, which runs from June 27-July 10. Eurosport is now the only channel in the U.K. to show live coverage of all four grand slam tournaments. Eurosport, a division of Discovery Communications, declined to disclose financial terms of the deal. The partnership between the AELTC, the BBC and Eurosport has been approved by U.K. broadcasting authority Ofcom. The BBC retains all free-to-air TV rights for the tournament and will continue to broadcast continuous daily live coverage in the U.K. across its channels. The BBC also remains the AELTC’s primary U.K. broadcast partner through '20. Eurosport's highlights program will be hosted by Rob Curling and airs every night at 10pm.
