S.League May Follow Malaysia Super League's Lead With Privatization

The S.League "could soon follow the lead of the Malaysia Super League and become privatised," according to ESPN. An ongoing study from FA of Singapore "is investigating the possibility of turning the S.League into a private entity." FAS President Zainudin Nordin said, "Some members of our staff are preparing a paper on the privatization of the S.League, and I've asked them to think through what exactly it is we want to achieve with the league." The benefits of privatization "would allow investors to monetise the assets of clubs, which has been done successfully for more than two decades by teams in the English Premier League." Across the Causeway, the MSL became privatized in Jan. '15 "after signing a 15-year deal with media rights' company, MP & Silva, and its 12 clubs are due to follow suit." Zainudin: "Is privatization the way to go? Do we have the ecosystem to back a private league? Should we try it, where are we going to find the financial backing for it? Should we scrap the league? There are many thoughts on each, and at the very least, it's good to ask the hard questions and to have a serious discussion about them" (ESPN, 6/15).
