Football Notes: Fatma Samoura Cleared To Start Work As New FIFA Secretary General

Senegalese Fatma Samoura "will begin work in her new role" as FIFA secretary general on Monday after "successfully passing an eligibility check." FIFA "confirmed its independent review committee has cleared Samoura to replace" Jérôme Valcke. Samoura "spent 21 years working for the United Nations" and becomes FIFA's first female secretary general. She will work alongside President Gianni Infantino (BBC, 6/14).

Germany's anti-cartel agency said that it "has received a complaint from a German manufacturer of goal-line technology over UEFA's choice of rival equipment for the European Championship in France." UEFA "picked the technology made by Hawk-Eye, a subsidiary of Sony, which is a major sponsor of the Champions League." The GoalControl company in Germany, whose technology was used at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, "believes there was no proper tender ahead of Euro 2016." UEFA "selected Hawk-Eye in April among four bidders" (AP, 6/14).

The Lahore High Court "has ruled" that Faisal Saleh Hayat is no longer president of the Pakistan Football Federation. The LHC judgement said that Hayat, who has been the chief of country’s football governing body since '03, "cannot be president for a fourth four-year term." It has also ruled "null and void the controversial elections" of the Punjab FA in April last year -- an event which "plunged Pakistan football into unprecedented conflict and crisis and saw the PFF split into two factions" (DAWN, 6/13).
