Event Notes: South African Minister Confirms Funding For 2022 Commonwealth Games

South African Sports & Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula confirmed that government "has received financial guarantees" from the National Treasury regarding the 2022 Commonwealth Games set to take place in Durban. Questions "have been raised around South Africa’s ability to successfully host the games and a lack of financial guarantees from National Treasury has raised concerns." However, in a statement, Mbalula said that government "remains committed to hosting the games." We have further highlighted the South African government in the interest of prudency and fiscal discipline, was engaged in an intra-governmental processes related to the necessary and finance guarantee.” He confirmed Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan "has given the go-ahead for funding" (EYEWITNESS NEWS, 6/6).

The exec committee of United World Wrestling announced Tehran "as the host city for Greco-Roman and freestyle World Cups for 2017." Iran "has hosted the past four Greco-Roman World Cups." The freestyle World Cup moves from L.A. where it was held the past three seasons and returns to Iran’s capital city where it was last held in '13 (MNA, 6/4).
