Supercars "will not be racing in Asia this year with the KL City Supercar Extravaganza cancelled because of a legal dispute between two rival promoters," according to James Phelps of the HERALD SUN. The event, which was scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur on Aug. 12-14, "was officially abandoned" on Tuesday as the legal dispute between former promoter GT Global and new promoter City Motorsport continued. The landmark Malaysian event "will not be replaced by another round after a bid to race at the Sepang Formula One circuit was also abandoned." V8 Supercars CEO James Warburton said, "We tried really had and we looked at an option to race at the Sepang International Circuit. We actually secured the circuit. We were a long way down the path with that option but unfortunately it wasn’t possible for a whole raft of reasons, mostly to do with timing and logistics." Warburton "is close to securing an Asian double-header for next year with Japan, Thailand, Indonesia and China all expressing interest in hosting a Supercars event in 2017." Warburton said, "We have been looking at a number of active markets." Warburton said that "another domestic round would not be added to the calendar this year." Warburton: "This race was an addition" (HERALD SUN, 5/31).
