ANURAG THAKUR has been "elected unopposed as the new president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India." The 41-year-old former BCCI secretary was the "only nominee and will serve as president" until Sept. '17. He replaces SHASHANK MANOHAR, who "stepped down this month in order to take charge" as an independent chairman at the Int'l Cricket Council. Former BCCI Treasurer AJAY SHIRKE, who resigned in protest at a former regime in '13, "becomes the new secretary" (BBC, 5/22). ... Former Scottish Premiership club Rangers CEO MARTIN BAIN has been "appointed as the new CEO of Premier League side Sunderland." He will "make the move to the Stadium of Light in July after quitting his post at Maccabi Tel Aviv." Bain was a "member of the SPL board during his time at Ibrox and was a key figure" of DAVID MURRAY’s regime before he resigned in June '11 following the arrival of CRAIG WHYTE (HERALD SCOTLAND, 5/22). ... Oilers Entertainment Group Vice Chair & CEO BOB NICHOLSON was unanimously re-elected as VP of the IIHF Council. Nicholson will continue his mandate representing the Americas on a four-year term (OEG).
COACHES/MANAGERS: Scottish Premiership side Celtic appointed BRENDAN RODGERS as its new manager. The former Liverpool, Swansea City, Reading and Watford boss "signed a 12-month rolling contract to replace RONNY DEILA, who departed the Scottish champions at the end of the season." Rodgers "left Anfield in October after more than three years in charge" (BBC, 5/20). ... Premier League side Watford announced the appointment of WALTER MAZZARRI as its new coach "on a three-year contract." The 54-year-old replaces QUIQUE SANCHEZ FLORES, who departed the club "after a break clause was activated in his contract, to become the Hornets' eighth manager in the last four years" (London DAILY MAIL, 5/21).
