The Giro d’Italia will pass through the French region of the Haute-Alpes May 27-28, but “without Lupo Wolfie,” according to 20 MINUTES. The event’s mascot, a wolf wearing a pink jersey, is “not welcome in the French mountains.” A statement from farmers in the region said, “Farmers have suffered from wolf predation for years. We are fighting in unions to exercise our profession with dignity, which is to say, to protect our herds from the predator. The display of this mascot in the midst of our pastures … is pure provocation that is humanly unacceptable to farmers.” The Haute-Alpes farmers “feel they are victims of tolerance for the animal” (20 MINUTES, 5/19). CYCLING WEEKLY’s Stuart Clarke reported while banning a person from wearing a wolf costume “may seem an extreme measure, the wolf problem in the region has provoked strong measures to be taken by angry farmers.” Last year some farmers “effectively held bosses of a national park hostage overnight demanding more to be done to protect their livestock against predators.” In ’14, around 8,500 animals were reportedly killed by wolves (CYCLING WEEKLY, 5/19).
