Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson Says New Everton Stadium Could Help Land 2026 CWG

Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson said that a new Everton stadium "could be key in the city landing the 2026 Commonwealth Games," according to the PA. A joint statement on Monday from Everton and Liverpool City Council said that they "had been investigating alternative plans for a new stadium for the club," with the focus no longer on Walton Hall Park but "two other potential brownfield sites within the city boundary." Anderson wants Liverpool to follow recent British hosts Manchester and Glasgow "in staging the Commonwealth Games in 10 years' time." He said that a new Everton stadium could host "not just the Commonwealth Games but things like the European Athletics championships and other sporting events." Anderson: "The new ground, when it's getting built, could accommodate that. Most of these events take place outside the football season so the ground could be used all year round" (PA, 5/17).
