German TV Channel Sport1 Draws Record Number With IIHF World Broadcast

German sports network Sport1 "drew a record viewership for its broadcast" of the 2016 Int'l Ice Hockey Federation World Championships, according to the SID. Germany's surprising 3-2 win over the U.S. during the tournament's preliminary round on Sunday attracted a peak audience of 1.02 million viewers. It was Germany's first win over a U.S. team in regulation in 23 years. The hockey game drew an average audience of 590,000 viewers and had a 3.3% market share. The previous high was set on Friday during the game between Germany and Belarus. The game, which Germany won 5-2, drew an average of 560,000 viewers and had a peak audience of 900,000. Sport1's broadcast of the world championship recorded a market share of up to 6.3% in the target demographic 14-49 (SID, 5/16).

SPANISH GP: The EP reported the free-TV broadcast of Sunday's Spanish F1 Grand Prix on Spanish broadcaster TVE's La 1 drew an average audience of 2.48 million viewers, which translated to a market share of 23.7% (EP, 5/16). In a separate piece, the SID reported the race "recorded more than 4.5 million viewers on German free-to-air TV channel RTL." The race, which was won by 18-year-old Max Verstappen, attracted an average viewership of 4.57 million viewers. The number translated into a market share of 27%. It was the most-watched race of the '16 season after beating out the Russian GP, which drew an average of 4.45 million viewers two weeks ago (SID, 5/16).
