Scottish Premiership Side Aberdeen Reveals Plans For New $58M Stadium

Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen has "revealed plans" for a £40M ($58M) stadium and training facility west of the city, according to Kaye Nicolson of STV. The "ambitious proposals" center on moving the club eight miles from Pittodrie to Kingsford, just 200m from the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route. Club Chair Stewart Milne also "incorporated a state-of-the-art training complex in the plans." It is "hoped the new venue would have a similar capacity to the 20,000-seat Pittodrie ground." The club "previously earmarked an alternative site at Loirston," but Milne said that Kingsford "is now the preferred location" (STV, 5/12). SKY SPORTS' Paul Vinnell reported Pittodrie was first used in 1899 and renovated in '93 but the club has been "keen to move for a number of years" as it is unable to develop the stadium any further. It appears as though Aberdeen's "search for a suitable site is over." Milne said, "Kingsford offers an opportunity to locate both the stadium and the training facilities within a single site, as was the original plan for Loirston, and it is in an ideal location for supporters travelling from all areas in and around Aberdeen" (SKY SPORTS, 5/12). The BBC reported Milne said that the next step will be a 12-week period of public consultation, after which initial planning for the training facilities will be applied for, with the outcome "expected later this year" (BBC, 5/12).
