RTL Secures Additional German National Team Broadcast Rights Starting In '18

German free-to-air TV channel RTL "has secured additional German national football team broadcast rights starting in '18," according to Nils Lehnebach of SPONSORs. Industry insiders said that the Cologne-based channel "was awarded with new broadcast rights by agency CAA Eleven." RTL reportedly "received the first package awarded in the ongoing tender for national team games in the rights period between '18-22." Reports suggest that RTL got the package that "includes the 12 games of the DFB team as part of the new UEFA Nations League." Insiders also said that RTL currently "is the highest bidder for packages No. 2 and 3, which covers the rights for the national team's Euro 2020 and 2022 World Cup qualifiers." In '14, RTL "entered the scene by aquiring the broadcast rights to Germany's Euro 2016 and 2018 World Cup qualifiers" (SPONSORs, 5/9).
