Event Notes: Eurostar Bans Alcohol On Certain Trains During Euro 2016 In France

Eurostar "plans to ban alcohol on some trains" during the Euro 2016 in France, which starts on June 10. A spokesperson for the operator said that on some of its services between London and French cities, alcoholic drinks "would not be sold and would be confiscated from passengers if found during screening at border controls." The spokesperson said, "Throughout the tournament, there are two levels of alcohol restriction: zero alcohol, and limited alcohol. These are applied during specific days and time periods, and passengers on affected trains will be notified of the relevant details for their journey in pre-travel emails" (REUTERS, 5/6).

Saturday's Greek Cup final between league champions Olympiakos Piraeus and AEK Athens was "postponed at the request of the police." The match "was due to be held behind closed doors due to crowd violence that has blighted this season's competition." However, a nationwide 48-hour strike by various trade unions that began on Friday meant the police "did not have the resources to oversee the game." No new date for the match "has been announced" (REUTERS, 5/6).

England cricket Team Dir Andrew Strauss will announce "a new one-day tournament on Sunday that will see teams picked for the first time using a computer programme." A new three match one-day series between the North versus South "will be played in Abu Dhabi next March with five players from each side including one spinner to be selected using the Professional Cricketers’ Association’s Most Valued Player ratings formula." The PCA’s MVP rankings were launched in '07 and reward players for their "contribution to the overall team result" (London DAILY TELEGRAPH, 5/7).

Stage 3 of the Fleche du Sud "has been cancelled following a major crash less than 10 kilometres into the race after the riders had begun a descent." Some media have reported that around 35 riders "have been seriously injured in the crash, and multiple ambulances and air ambulances were required." Information about the incident "is scarce" but, according to RTL.lu, the accident occurred while the peloton "was travelling between 70-80kph and a rider came down near the front." They subsequently reported that 14 riders "had been injured in the crash" (CYCLING NEWS, 5/6).
