FIFA President Gianni Infantino has "urged European football leaders to give money to poorer federations from the increased funds they get from Zurich," according to the AP. Infantino told the 54 UEFA federations, "Give it to other federations around the world if you don't need the money." All FIFA members "should get big increases in their annual grant" to fulfill a key election promise by Infantino. European federations "earn much more than other countries" as UEFA, the richest of the six continental confederations, "pays even more to its members" than it gets from FIFA. Infantino said, "You in Europe, we can show together, we can make a difference in the world. With very little we can achieve a lot" (AP, 5/3).
NEW SECRETARY GENERAL: The AFP reported Infantino said on Tuesday that he is aiming to name a secretary-general within months and already has "a couple" of names in mind. Infantino said that his "new deputy would not be European." Without naming any candidates, he said, "I am speaking to people, contacts have started, I have a couple of people in mind" (AFP, 5/3).
