Spanish Politician Urges European Commission To Resolve FIBA-Euroleague Conflict

Santiago Fisas of Spain's Partido Popular wrote to the European Commission about FIBA Europe's sanctions on various national basketball federations, including Spain's, according to EL CONFIDENCIAL. Fisas, the president of Spain's Superior Sports Council (CSD) from '98-99, asked the EC to take measures to stop "the restrictive and abusive practices that the int'l basketball federation is applying." Fisas asked for the EC to intervene and try to look for a solution to the problem, and requested that it "find a solution through dialogue with the Euroleague and the various clubs and leagues, as it is impossible for there to be a competition without the participation of the clubs and players. ... Basketball and its fans should not be penalized by this situation" (EL CONFIDENCIAL, 4/27).
