Olympic Notes: Trump Hotel Rush Adds To Rio Olympics Lodging Crunch

Builders behind Rio de Janeiro’s first Trump-branded hotel "are racing to open the property in July, just weeks before the Summer Olympics." Not all lodgers "are confident" they will make it. Several int'l sports federations, which are slated to stay at the Trump Hotel in the tourist district of Barra de Tijuca, "were told by Olympic organizers last week that they are concerned it won’t be ready on time and a back-up hotel has been arranged." Rio 2016 Dir of Sport Agberto Guimaraes said, "That is the one we fear." Still, the Trump "is further along than two Holiday Inns that were expected to be ready for the event." This month InterContinental Hotels Group Plc. said that "the sites have been delayed until after the games in 2017." Trump Hotels said that "its developer has assured the hotel will open in the posh Jardim Oceanico sub-district of Barra de Tijuca before the first Olympics in South America" (BLOOMBERG, 4/24).

German athletes "will receive" up to €20,000 ($22,500) for a Gold Medal at August's Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. Germany's athletes will receive €15,000 ($16,900) for Silver and €10,000 ($11,270) for Bronze, while finalists will bank from €5,000 ($5,630) for fourth place to €1,500 ($1,690) for finishing eighth. The scale "will also be used for the Paralympic Games in Rio" (GLOBAL TIMES, 4/25).
