Wimbledon To Boost Prize Money For '16 Champions To $2.9M Each

Wimbledon bosses "are considering upping the prize money for this year's tournament" to £2M ($2.9M), according to Nick Harris of the London DAILY MAIL. Tennis players competing at Wimbledon "have seen their earnings increase at more than twice the rate of Premier League footballers in the last six years," with the tennis stars of SW19 "set to take home double what they made" in '10 from this year’s championships. The '16 champions are set to earn £2M each, with a total tournament prize fund of £26.75M ($38.55M). The All England Club will announce the prize fund for this summer’s "showcase event" on Tuesday, "when it is expected to be revealed" that the singles winners will earn around £2M each, a Wimbledon record. The '16 prize fund is expected to be £28M ($40.4M)-plus, "with every stage of the singles competition" being worth at least 100% more than in '10 (DAILY MAIL, 4/23).
