U.K. PM David Cameron said that MPs "should consider making doping in sport a criminal offence," after a series of scandals that have raised the issue's profile high on the political agenda.
Asked during his weekly question session in parliament what more could be done to tackle doping, Cameron said that "sport would be among topics discussed at an anti-corruption summit due to be held in Britain in May." He said, "We are going to be looking at corruption in sport and bringing forward new codes of practice that we will adopt in this country, we hope others will adopt" (REUTERS, 4/13).
The Int'l Cycling Union (UCI) announced that it decided to suspend, with immediate effect, the trial of disc brakes currently being carried out in road races.
This decision follows a request to do so made by the Association Internationale des Groupes Cyclistes Professionnels (AIGCP) -- which represents all professional cycling teams -- following the injuries suffered by Movistar Team rider Francisco Ventoso at Sunday’s Paris-Roubaix Classic. This request is supported by the Cyclistes Professionnels Associés, which represents riders (UCI).
France has been accused of "deliberately losing a match at last week's Men's Water Polo Olympic Games Qualification Tournament in Trieste" to ensure that it helped ifself qualify for Rio 2016.
David Hart, a former member of Canada's water polo team, has contacted the Int'l Swimming Federation (FINA) and the IOC about the incident, "which is now being investigated."
He "has also started an online petition demanding punishment for France," which lost the match 13-4 against Canada on April 7. The defeat "ensured France an easier path to the semi-finals and they took full advantage" (INSIDE THE GAMES, 4/14).
