Slovenian Architect Proposes Remodeling Of Boca Junior's Bombonera Stadium

When it was suggested that Argentine first division side Boca Juniors would build a new stadium on the land it recently acquired, "fans showed their anger," according to CLARÍN. But the club "needs a bigger stadium" and now President Daniel Angelici "could be closer to renovating the stadium, which would include restructuring some of the suites." One possible project is from Slovenian architect Tomaz Camernik. He said that "it would be stupid to build a new stadium that would be like any other in the world" when the Bombonera is considered "the best stadium in the world." Camernik's proposal is 79 pages long and proposes -- with virtual images and engineering studies -- "tearing down the boxes and rebuilding them, incorporating a strip of sections that would make it possible to completely close the third ring of the stadium, which would add 12,000 seats" (CLARÍN, 4/8). In Buenos Aires, Pablo Lisotto reported Boca Juniors has 174,273 members. A new stadium proposed by Angelici would have a capacity of 80,000, but "more than half of the club's members would remain outside." This "would not be a sufficient solution of the problem." The proposal by Camernik "is gaining strength." Camernik, "a disciple of Viktor Sulcic, one of the architects of the original Bombonera," turned his proposal into the club. Both Angelici and club Treasurer Matías Ahumada "were surprised by the quality and seriousness of the presentation." However, "they have not spoken of it in public." Camernik's proposal "faces one problem: the structure of the new third tier would be above Del Calle Iberlucea street and would invade, at 20 meters, the space above some homes in the area" (LA NACION, 4/7). Lisotto reported in a separate piece Camernik "believes his project would contribute a solution for the club, without needing to build a new stadium." Camernik "came up studying the work of Sulcic." Now, "he is trying to save the stadium Sulcic helped design." He said of the third tier "being above" the street outside the stadium, "It is the only way to add seats without destroying the nearby homes. And the club can get authorization. Boca is a powerful club. Nothing is impossible for Boca." He said of the current stadium, "It is an architectural masterpiece, with a great history. ... Boca is the Bombonera and the Bombonera is Boca. There is nothing like this in the world. There is only one Great Wall of China, one Eiffel Tower, one Colosseum and one Bombonera" (LA NACION, 4/8).
