Football Notes: Kenya Could Face Ban From Confederation Of African Football

Kenya is "staring at a ban" from the Confederation of African Football following crowd trouble that was witnessed during Harambee Stars' 1-0 defeat to visiting Guinea Bissau on Sunday. The continental body "could also strip Kenya" of the rights to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in '18 should it "mete out a suspension." The scenario unfolded on Sunday after fans "hurled missiles, halting play moments after Guinea Bissau scored" in the return leg of the 2017 Africa Nations Cup qualifier at Nyayo Stadium (STANDARD DIGITAL, 3/28).

The longest-serving FA Cup trophy has been valued at more than £1M ($1.43M) on the Antiques Roadshow -- making it the BBC show's "most valuable item." The cup was presented to winning teams from 1911 until it was replaced in '92. It was valued in an edition of the long-running program recorded in Harrogate and shown on Sunday evening. The show's previous highest valuation was £1M for a model of Antony Gormley's Angel of the North sculpture (BBC, 3/28).

Australia's hopes of a fourth successive World Cup appearance "hinge on the result of Tuesday night's qualifier against Jordan" but for thousands of Indigenous children living in remote areas, "the victory has already been won." Australia's elite footballers pledged A$90,000 ($67,900) in appearance fees for the Jordan game to a foundation providing Indigenous children in remote areas "access to elite football development and education." The sum represents the "overwhelming majority of the players' match appearance fees which will be donated to the John Moriarty Football foundation," as part of Football Federation Australia's launch of the first Indigenous football week (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 3/28).

In what can "only be described as a very calculated altruistic move" the Romanian national football team is trying to "generate more interest in math in an effort to alleviate the country's poor school dropout rate." The Romanian football federation "swapped the squad numbers on their training apparel with mathematical equations" ahead of its goalless friendly match against Spain on Sunday. The initiative was "devised to combat Romania's poor school dropout rate" which at 18% is the highest in the European Union (THE DRUM, 3/28).
