ManU and Liverpool have been charged by UEFA "after ugly scenes of violence involving fans at Old Trafford and chants about the Munich air disaster by a section of supporters from the Merseyside club," according to Martyn Ziegler of the LONDON TIMES. Both clubs can "expect heavy fines" and Liverpool is also looking into claims that a 20-year-old player at its academy mocked the '58 Munich disaster, which claimed the lives of eight United players, on his Twitter account. The crowd disturbances "took place at the Europa League second leg round of 16 match on Thursday." Liverpool has also been charged with "illicit chanting" by supporters. The club "may feel aggrieved," however, after ManU "escaped disciplinary action over taunts related to the Hillsborough disaster that were chanted by some fans during the first leg, at Anfield." Five men were arrested after the clashes at Old Trafford, "in which rival fans brawled in the stands and flares and objects were thrown during the match." The UEFA charges "will be considered" by the governing body's control, ethics and disciplinary committee on May 19. ManU has "been hit with three charges: crowd disturbances, the throwing of objects, as well as having blocked stairways, contrary to UEFA's safety and security regulations." Liverpool has "a total of five charges to answer: crowd disturbances, the illicit chanting, the setting off of flares, throwing objects and the team coming out late for the kick-off" (LONDON TIMES, 3/19).
