Franchise Notes: Man City Sponsor Virgin Trains Ribs ManU Boss Van Gaal

ManU Manager Louis van Gaal was "on the end of a dig" from a sponsor of Man City after his side lost 2-0 to Liverpool in the Europa League. Man City sponsor Virgin Trains "offered little sympathy to the under-pressure coach" -- offering him a "one-way ticket back to Manchester." Posting to its Twitter page, the company said that Van Gaal "may need consoling with a cup of tea following the result," while his ticket number was "0-2" (London INDEPENDENT, 3/11).

National Rugby League side Parramatta Eels "launched an investigation into fresh allegations of salary cap rorting at the club" and club CEO John Boulous said it is "committed to working with the NRL on the issue." Boulous has been widely criticized for "remaining quiet on the issue since reports broke last week of more salary cap drama at the Eels, including allegations of manipulation of third party deals." Boulous: "The club is taking the recent reports very seriously and the board has met at length to discuss the various matters raised" (AAP, 3/13).
