Russia Tennis Chief Expects To See Sharapova At Rio Despite Failed Drugs Test

The Russian Tennis Federation "expects Maria Sharapova to represent her country at this year's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, despite being provisionally suspended from the game after testing positive for a banned substance," according to the ABC. Sharapova "failed a drug test at the Australian Open" because of a substance called Mildronate. But Russian Tennis Federation President Shamil Tarpischev said that "he still expected Sharapova to play in Rio de Janeiro." Tarpischev said, "I think this is just a load of nonsense. The sportsmen take what they are given by the physiotherapists and by the doctors. I think Sharapova will play at the Olympics, however, we will need to see how this will develop" (ABC, 3/8).
