Star India To Air ICC Twenty20 World Cup Only On Sports Channels

Broadcaster Star India "decided to limit the telecast" of the Int'l Cricket Council World Twenty20 to its sports network and is expected to reap advertising revenue of around Rs 300 crore ($44.5M) from the tournament, which will play out from Tuesday to April 3, according to TELEVISION POST. This "is in contrast to the 50-over edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup of 2015, which had a wide coverage on Star India’s regional channels as well." The T20 World Cup, which is happening for the first time in India, will be aired in English and Hindi on Star Sports 1 and 3 and their HD versions Star Sports HD1 and HD3. The event "will also be streamed live on Star India’s online destination Hotstar." Star India COO Sanjay Gupta said that "the sports channels will provide good reach for the matches." Gupta’s confidence "stems from the fact that the broadcaster had recently signed multi-year deals with the national multi-system operators" under which the latter are obliged to put two sports channels in the base pack to ensure a higher reach (TELEVISION POST, 3/7).
