Liverpool Manager Jürgen Klopp To Get $142M 'War Chest' For Summer Transfer Spend

Liverpool Manager Jürgen Klopp will be handed a £100M ($142M) "war chest to turn Liverpool into title contenders," according to Mike McGrath of THE SUN. The club’s Fenway Sports Group owners are "willing to back their German boss in a monster summer spending spree." Klopp wants a new goalkeeper and "aims to buy British" -- with Jack Butland and Fraser Forster both targets. But a "marquee attacker is top of his Anfield shopping list this summer." Owner John W. Henry has "been impressed with the German's five months in charge after he replaced axed Brendan Rodgers." Klopp: "If there's a player who won't join Liverpool because we don't play in the Champions League, or will only join because we're in the Champions League, that's not for us" (THE SUN, 3/5).

UNDERESTIMATED: REUTERS' Shravanth Vijayakumar reported former general counsel for FSG Edward Weiss revealed it had "underestimated" how poor the squad actually was and was "overconfident" about rebuilding the club it purchased in '10. The admissions came during a Supreme Court hearing in N.Y. this week "relating to a long-running legal dispute" with Mill Financial, an American company, suing the club's former co-Owner George Gillett Jr. and the Royal Bank of Scotland. Weiss said, "You know, I think we underestimated how poor the playing quality of the (Liverpool) squad was, and frankly, we underestimated how difficult it was going to be to stabilize the asset. We were overconfident in assuming that many of the things that we had done in Boston at Fenway would translate naturally to the Premier League, and they just didn't all translate" (REUTERS, 3/4).
