Real Madrid Begins Stadium Renovation Talks With City Council

Real Madrid has begun discussing with Madrid City Council officials a "new renovation" of the Santiago Bernabéu, according to Marta Belver of EL MUNDO. Although the "outline is still in the embryonic phase," the club has the knowledge that it will have authorization to cover the stadium, "as it was imagined in the initial proposal." The first project "was paralyzed by a Madrid court after three appeals were lodged." Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena "has outlined the red lines that the alternative plan cannot cross:" it has to be "compatible with public interest, not involve altering or occupying public land and fit within the area the stadium currently occupies." In "other words, Real Madrid has to bet on a model completely different from the original." Madrid Councilor for Sustainable Urban Development José Manuel Calvo said, "Any solution had to pass with strict compliance with the law" (EL MUNDO, 3/6).
