Mexico Reiterates Wish To Host 2026 World Cup, Become First Three-Time WC Host

Mexican Football Federation (FMF) President Decio De Maria said that Mexico "reiterated its wish" to host the 2026 World Cup and try to become the first country to organize the tournament three times, according to the AP. Mexico, in '70 and '86, is one of "five countries to host the event twice." Italy ('34 and '90), France ('38 and '98), Brazil ('50 and '14) and Germany ('74 and '06) are the others. De Maria said, "We know that a World Cup means beyond what's at stake on the field. Being the host of the biggest party in the world is an honor and it means a lot for the country. In due time, Mexico will hold the hand high and follow up with the FIFA procedures to hold the tournament." The Mexican teams "have been busy in the last few years investing in new stadiums." The Azteca stadium is "being adapted" to celebrate its 50th anniversary and to host NFL games in the next few years (ESPN, 3/5).
