Australian Anti-Doping Agency Warned Clubs About Employing Banned Players

The Australian Football League was told in January by the national anti-doping authority that "banned Essendon players were not allowed to hold welfare positions like Brent Prismall's at the Western Bulldogs," according to Lane & Nicholson of THE AGE. Prismall was "forced to stand down from a position at the Dogs this week" and the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority said that it "never approved his role." Western Bulldogs President Peter Gordon is "adamant" the AFL -- until this week -- had "only ever approved Prismall remaining in his paid welfare position at the club." The club is "committed to keeping Prismall employed" but has not specified publicly how it will use him in a job that will meet anti-doping rules. Another former Bomber, Greater Western Sydney assistant coach Mark McVeigh, "was escorted from the training track when it was announced he had been banned for the season." The Giants felt the AFL anti-doping code "made it clear McVeigh could not continue to be involved with the club's football department in any capacity while suspended." The club made a general inquiry to the AFL about "having McVeigh work through his suspension in an administrative-type role and on Thursday had not yet received a reply" (THE AGE, 3/3).
