NRL Side Cronulla CEO Says Club Remains Committed To Remondis Stadium

National Rugby League side Cronulla CEO Lyall Gorman insisted his club "remains committed to playing at Shark Park" and has begun "investigating the possibility of increasing the capacity" of the ground to 25,000 ahead of a meeting with the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust to discuss plans to rebuild Allianz Stadium, according to Brent Read of THE AUSTRALIAN. Gorman confirmed he planned to meet officials from the SCG Trust on March 10 "but it appears any move to have the Sharks playing out of a rebuilt venue is destined to fail." Gorman: "What we’re doing out there with the redevelopment of that area ... with the stadium sitting in the middle, it has always been a part of our long-term plan and vision. The commitment of the shire -- they have been there a long time now, 50 years next year -- that’s where they expect their footy team to be playing. So that’s what we’re driven about at the moment." The SCG Trust "is currently locked in a battle with officials from ANZ Stadium over securing the bulk" of the New South Wales government’s A$1.6B ($1.16B) commitment to upgrade venues in Sydney (THE AUSTRALIAN, 2/26).
