Olympic Notes: AIBA Set To Allow Professional Boxers To Compete In Rio Olympics

The Int'l Boxing Association (AIBA) said that professional boxers are "set to become eligible to compete in the Rio Olympics." Radical new proposals being pushed through AIBA "could theoretically see the likes of Anthony Joshua defend the heavyweight title he won at the London Games in 2012." There is "no indication whether he is likely to be keen on that or whether any other high-profile fighters are hoping to commit to the event in Brazil" (SKY SPORTS, 2/24). ... Germany's sailor of the year Heiko Kröger called on his compatriots to "boycott the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events in Rio de Janeiro this summer." He was "disgusted by the water quality in Guanabara Bay after a test event." Kröger: "Domestic waste, sewage, dead rats and fish, used condoms -- it's really disgusting." He said that he had "been vaccinated for everything possible," did all he could to "avoid getting water in his mouth and disinfected his equipment after training sessions" (LONDON TIMES, 2/24). ... The Tokyo 2020 organizing committee announced TOTO Ltd. as a Tokyo 2020 official partner, the second domestic tier of the Tokyo 2020 sponsorship program. TOTO will be the official bathroom and kitchen fixtures partner (Tokyo 2020).
