Names In The News

Former Spanish football club Racing de Santander coach FERNANDO TRÍO ZABALA, who was known as NANDO YOSU, died on Saturday. The club announced the news of his death over the weekend and held a "minute of silence in his memory" on Sunday prior to the game against Sporting B (MARCA, 2/20). ... British double world and Olympic champion MO FARAH said that athletics must make "an example" of countries that do not follow doping rules. The IAAF "could ban Kenya's track and field team" from this year's Rio Olympics. When asked if the absence of Kenya would "devalue" the Games, Farah said, "As a country they just have to follow the rules and if they can't follow the rules then tough on them...we have to set an example" (REUTERS, 2/19). ... American golfer MICHELLE WIE said that "she would like to see one of the five women's major championships staged in Asia." The region's "heavy interest" in the women's game, "buoyed by the number of local players at the top of the world rankings," is reflected with seven events on the LPGA schedule in Asia. Wie said, "I think whether or not it should be a major tournament is really not in our hands. The LPGA takes in to consideration a lot of guidelines regarding that. It would be nice to see Asia have a major championship. Some things need to happen for that, you never know...it would be really nice to see" (REUTERS, 2/20). ... McLaren Formula One team said that Japan's NOBUHARU MATSUSHITA "will be McLaren's test and development driver this season." Matsushita, 22, will "concentrate on work in the team's simulator to support race drivers JENSON BUTTON and FERNANDO ALONSO while also competing in the GP2 feeder series" (REUTERS, 2/20). ... F1 CEO BERNIE ECCLESTONE's son-in-law is "facing a prison sentence after being charged with helping a drug trafficker." JAY RUTLAND was charged with assisting an offender and "will appear at Thames magistrates courts" on March 16. The former city trader is understood to be accused of helping JAMES TARRANT, "who handed himself in last year after five years on the run" (London GUARDIAN, 2/21). ... Former ManU Manager DAVID MOYES said that the club should give LOUIS VAN GAAL more time, or risk becoming known as "a sacking club." Moyes himself was "given the chop after just ten months at Old Trafford," after being named as ALEX FERGUSON's successor, and he wants ManU to "allow managers to do their jobs," just as they did with Ferguson. Moyes: "He's still in the cup competitions, they're not out of the cup competitions. They're in it. I would expect him to win the Europa League game and I think we'd all expect them to beat Shrewsbury" (90MIN, 2/21).
