Former Minister For Sport Lays Out Vision For Adelaide Sports Complex

A new vision for the Riverbank precinct is being considered with a A$100M ($71M) to A$200M ($142M) multi-sport center to complete the Adelaide Oval redevelopment "ahead of a bilateral push to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games," according to Jesper Fjeldstad of THE ADVERTISER. Former Minister for Sport Michael Wright has written to members of parliament after taking over the presidency of Sports SA and "outlined key issues which are crucial to South Australian sport with a range of recommendations." Near the top of the list is a "new multi-sport venue, envisaged to be near Adelaide Oval or at the grounds of Adelaide High School," and will continue to enhance the sporting district around the River Torrens. Tennis SA also has a proposal before the government "suggesting it is time for an upgrade" of the historic Memorial Drive tennis center, which now hosts the World Tennis Challenge after losing its ATP event to Brisbane and its new tennis center. Wright said that a multi-sport center near Adelaide Oval "could solve all of the shortcomings in one strike" and allowing for construction works around one year "could be done in the next two or three years." The vision is that the new complex, similar to Melbourne Park’s multi-sport complex, "could host basketball, netball, volleyball and tennis" (THE ADVERTISER, 2/16).
