Formula E Confirms New Berlin ePrix Location In City Center Of Germany's Capital

This year's Berlin ePrix will take place on a new custom-made track in the heart of the German capital, Formula E confirmed. The electric racing series was forced to find a replacement venue after Berlin's decommissioned Tempelhof Airport was unavailable to host the second edition of the event. The new 2.03km, 11-turn circuit still requires the approval from Berlin city authorities and FIA. But in a statement, Formula E said that all relevant parties are working hard on the approval of the new location. Tempelhof, which hosted the inaugural Berlin ePrix in May last year, is currently being used by government authorities to house refugees in its hangars. The proposed alternative track winds its way around the Strausberger Platz and toward Alexanderplatz, with the pitlane on Karl-Marx-Allee in the former Soviet-occupied eastern part of the city. Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag told SBD Global in a recent interview that the series intended to keep the event in Berlin. Formula E, however, also looked at other venues in Germany such as Nuremberg’s Norisring after it became aware of the situation at Tempelhof. Agag: "It is fantastic news that we have been able to find a new location to race in Berlin and I want to thank everybody who has been involved in making this happen … Germany is an incredibly important market for Formula E." Tickets for the eighth round of the ’15-16 season are on sale now, with prices starting from €20 ($22). Children six years and younger as well as seniors over the age of 60 will be able to enter the event on May 21 for free. Whether the race will return to Tempelhof Airport during the series' third season is not yet known.
