Franchise Notes: McClaren Calls Newcastle Transfer Spend Statement Of Intent

EPL side Newcastle Manager Steve McClaren said that "the club made a statement of intent" to its fellow relegation strugglers by being the Premier League's biggest spenders in the January transfer window. Newcastle, which has been "in the thick of the relegation battle all season," spent £29M ($42.3M) to sign Jonjo Shelvey, Henri Saivet and Andros Townsend on permanent deals, while Seydou Doumbia joined on loan. McClaren: "I think we've done great business -- they're four very good signings. It's a statement of intent of what we want to do. We can go forward with a good squad" (REUTERS, 2/2). ... Renault "unveiled its new RS16 car, painted in black-and-yellow livery, that will mark its return to Formula 1 as a works team" in '16. During a press launch held on the outskirts of Paris on Wednesday, Renault Chair Carlos Ghosn "heralded the new era for the French car manufacturer" with its new predominantly black color scheme. The team, however, hinted that "this could change before the season-opening Australian Grand Prix" (MOTORSPORT, 2/2).
