German Hockey League, Deutsche Telekom Sign Four-Year Media Rights Deal

German telecom Deutsche Telekom will become the German Hockey League's (DEL) new media partner after it acquired the league's rights for the next four seasons starting with the '16-17 season. The agreement includes all media rights and includes a one-sided option for an additional four years. DEL CEO Gernot Tripcke: "The cooperation will open new fascinating opportunities for the DEL. It's a big step that will provide hockey as a whole with a big boost." Deutsche Telekom will show all DEL games live and in HD through its Entertain TV offering, online and mobile devices starting with the '16-17 season. In addition, Telekom plans to show live games through a free-to-air TV partner. Financial details of the deal were not revealed (DEL). SPONSORs Gabriel Wagner reported that the DEL "will also change its overtime rules with the new season." In line with the NHL's rule change, the league "decided to play its five-minute overtime during the regular season with only three players on the ice." The rule intends "to make overtime more attractive" (SPONSORs, 1/26).
