Olympic Notes: IOC Pleased With Tokyo's 2020 Summer Games Preparations

The IOC said on Friday that Tokyo's preparations for the 2020 Summer Games could not be better "despite embarrassments such as scrapping its logo" and delays in building its centerpiece stadium. IOC VP John Coates told a news conference after the governing body's fifth review of Tokyo's preparations that "everything was going superlatively." He said, "For a city that's four years out to the Games, I don't think we've ever seen a city more prepared. Four years out, we couldn't be happier" (REUTERS, 1/22). ... The Agitos Foundation and the PyeongChang 2018 Organizing Committee will deliver a series of workshops and grants for equipment to improve winter sport around the world as part of the legacy of the next Paralympic Winter Games. The partnership is part of PyeongChang 2018’s Actualizing the Dream project and will feature five workshops for sport managers, coaches and athletes in alpine skiing, snowboard, cross-country skiing, biathlon, ice sledge hockey and wheelchair curling. Funding will also be made available for national paralympic committees to purchase equipment, helping them grow the next generation of athletes (Int'l Paralympic Committee). ... The Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee welcomed The Yomiuri Shimbun, The Asahi Shimbun Company, Nikkei Inc. and The Mainichi Newspapers Co., Ltd. as Tokyo 2020 official partners, the second domestic tier of the Tokyo 2020 sponsorship program. The four companies have been jointly attributed the category "Newspapers." Their addition brings the total number of Tokyo 2020 partners to 26, including 11 official partners (Tokyo 2020).
