League Championship side Bolton Wanderers has revealed its staff "will not be paid on time in January as the financial crisis continues at the Macron Stadium," according to the PA.
Earlier this week Wanderers appeared in the high court over a £2.2M ($3.1M) unpaid tax bill to U.K. tax authority HMRC and, despite the tax authority’s attempts to wind them up, they "were given a five-week adjournment." The club is confident it "can ease its debt by selling a car park at the ground, next to the Middlebrook retail park but, with that deal yet to go through, Bolton are unable to guarantee their staff will be paid on time on Thursday." A statement read, "Every effort continues to be made by the board of directors and its advisers to pay staff and also resolve the longer-term funding issue during what remains a difficult and challenging time for the football club." While the financial adviser Trevor Birch negotiates with four interested parties about a takeover from Owner Eddie Davies, everything "is up for sale at the Macron Stadium, including assets and players" (PA, 1/20).
