St. Petersburg Could Lose Right To Host 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup Matches

St. Petersburg could lose the right to host 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup matches as there are concerns about the readiness of Zenit Arena, Russian media reported. As construction is apparently lagging behind schedule, there is a probability that a FIFA inspection visit scheduled for early April could be canceled. "There is a serious risk of thwarting the FIFA visit and, with transport access problems added, the issue of taking St. Petersburg off the list of host cities of the [Confederations] Cup will arise," a source in the FIFA 2018 organizing committee was quoted as saying by the local daily Fontanka. He added that apart from worries about the completion of the stadium itself, there is uncertainty about building a bridge leading to it, parking lots and a subway station. Last month, St. Petersburg Governor Georgy Poltavchenko declined to approve a project for a bridge as costs were considered to be excessive, and its future is now uncertain. Construction of Zenit Arena, Russia's most expensive football stadium ever, began in '07 and has gone substantially behind schedule and over budget. Local authorities pledged that the arena will be unveiled by May 27, but there have been reports that the date could be pushed back to August.
