Passage Of Real Decreto Leads To Increase In Revenue For Mediapro

The centralized sale of La Liga's TV rights has meant "more money for the clubs," according to Javier Gómez Matallanas of EL CONFIDENCIAL. It has been "even better for Mediapro." In the new scenario, from its "privileged position" due to its relationship with Spanish Football League (LFP) President Javier Tebas, Mediapro has "won all the competitions in blowouts." The company "is playing the long ball, yes, but it is winning in the form of juicy gains." The Jaume Roures-led company "scored its first goal after becoming the exclusive agent selling the league's rights globally." It also was able to "multiply its revenue from int'l rights by three:" from around €230M last season to €635M ($692M) this season. By doing so as the intermediary designated by La Liga, Mediapro earns €96.5M ($105M) -- €50M ($54.5M) of the first €450M ($490M) made from the sale, plus 25% of the difference between €450M and the total -- for the '15-16 season. That comes from the terms of a five-year contract that began with the current season. Given that La Liga expects an annual increase of €25M ($27.2M)-€30M ($32.7M) from foreign rights, Mediapro will earn around €500M ($545M) for its work as the intermediary (EL CONFIDENCIAL, 1/18).
