Olympic Notes: Tokyo Officials Advocate For Olympic Medals Made Out Of Recycled Metals

Tokyo 2020 organizers on Thursday "advocated making their Olympic medals out of recycled metals in an effort to give an environmentally 'sustainable' hue to the Games." Task force Chair Hiroshi Komiyama said that members of a task force in charge of drawing up a "legacy plan" for the event "are advocating that the gold, silver and bronze medals be made from recycled metals." Discarded products such as mobile phones, personal computers and others containing precious metals "could be used to produce the medals" (AFP, 1/14). ... Environmental officials said that thousands of dead fish "washed up on the shores of Rio's Guanabara Bay on Wednesday, not far from where events are being held at this year's Olympic Games." The incident "was the latest involving water quality in the bay, where sailing, open water swimming, and triathlon races are due to take place at the Games in August" (REUTERS, 1/13). ... China has chosen Sao Paulo's Esporte Clube Pinheiros "as its training base ahead of this year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro." The country's athletes "will use the club in Brazil's most populous city to train and aclimatize" ahead of the Aug. 5-21 Games. The Chinese delegation "is expected to total around 350 people, including athletes, coaches, officials and conditioning staff" (XINHUA, 1/13).
