Paraguayan Prosecutors Send Seized CONMEBOL Documents To U.S.

Paraguayan prosecutors said that they have "started going through the documents" seized during a raid of CONMEBOL's HQ and will send them to the U.S., "which is leading a probe on corruption in football," according to the AP. The U.S. Justice Department last year "indicted several football officials and businessmen." The men charged include the last three presidents of CONMEBOL, which has its offices in Asunción, Paraguay. Prosecutor Hernán Galeano said that authorities seized contracts dating from '91-15 during Thursday's raid (AP, 1/9). The EFE reported Bolivian District Attorney Ramiro Guerrero announced on Sunday that South America's District Attorney's offices will meet in Ecuador to "coordinate action against the corruption discovered in the national football federations." Guerrero: "We are coordinating at the international level. In the coming weeks we will have a meeting in Quito with the District Attorney's offices that are investigating corruption in South American football." He highlighted that after action taken by the U.S. Department of Justice against FIFA execs, Bolivia's District Attorney's office "was the first in South America to begin its own investigations against various national directors who are now under arrest -- one of whom has been sentenced" (EFE, 1/10).
