Sri Lanka's World Cup-winning former captain ARJUNA RANATUNGA "suffered an embarrassing" loss along with his brother NISHANTHA as THILANGA SUMATHIPALA was elected president of the country's cricket board on Sunday (PTI, 1/3). ... Former French basketball int’l SACHA GIFFA was named assistant coach for Pro A team Paris-Levallois. He takes the place of FRÉDÉRIC FAUTHOUX, who was named head coach after the club released ANTOINE RIGAUDEAU (L’ÉQUIPE, 1/3). ... Former A-League side Bisbane Strikers midfielder JAMES JOHNSON "will head a new department within FIFA." The Professional Football Department “will be a central body for professional football activities and be responsible for the relations with professional football stakeholders, such as the European Club Association, FIFPro and the world leagues, as well as other parties of relevance on professional football policy matters.” The department "will begin its work within the Legal Affairs Division." Johnson has been with FIFA since May '13 "when he joined as a senior manager of member associations & development" (THE WORLD GAMES, 1/3). ... Premier League side Everton "appointed former U.S. Olympic Committee Exec PETER VINT" as director of the club's acadamy. Vint was "previously senior director of competitive analysis, research and innovation at USOC." His team of sports science and medical professionals "supported five national governing bodies, including USA Track and Field and USA Swimming, that won 64 medals between them at the 2012 London Olympics" (REUTERS, 12/30). ... The MLB Washington Nationals promoted Baseball Operations Analyst MICHAEL DEBARTOLO to director of baseball operations and Dir of Latin American Operations JOHNNY DIPUGLIA to VP/int'l operations (WASHINGTONPOST, 12/30).
