Telecom KT Signs Supply Contract For PyeongChang Olympics

KT said Tuesday that the mobile carrier has signed an exclusive contract with an organizing committee of the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics "to provide the world's first fifth-generation (5G) network system at the upcoming sports event," according to Lee Min-hyung of the KOREA TIMES. KT is "one of the most aggressive carriers against rivals SK Telecom and LG Uplus, in the 5G project." Last year, the mobile carrier "inked a partnership deal with the committee" of the upcoming Olympic games in '18. The company has since served as a "key supporter of the event," pledging to build the 5G network and demonstrate it for the first time in the world. KT said that it "plans to build a 5G network test bed in major cities in Gangwon Province and downtown Seoul before the event kicks off" (KOREA TIMES, 12/29).
