Rome 2024 Bid Announces 11 Cities To Host Football Matches

Eleven cities across Italy "would host football matches as part of Rome's bid for the 2024 Olympics," according to the AP. Among the "venues selected on Wednesday for the men's and women's tournaments" are the San Siro in Milan, Juventus' home ground in Turin, and the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Matches "would also be played" in Verona, Udine, Genoa, Bologna, Florence, Naples, Bari and Palermo. The quarterfinals and semifinals "would be in Milan and Naples, with both finals in Rome." Italian Olympic Committee CEO Giovanni Malago said that "11 cities, 11 stadiums -- it is from here that Rome's bid becomes the candidacy of the country" (AP, 12/23). WORLD FOOTBALL INSIDER reported Giuseppe Meazza Stadium is the "largest football stadium in Italy with a total capacity above 80,018 while Stadio San Paolo can hold 60,240 spectators for the quarters and semis." Rome’s Stadio Olimpico "can seat 72,698 for the final matches" (WORLD FOOTBALL INSIDER, 12/23).
