Event Notes: Austin City Council Signs Off On COTA Incentives

A split Austin City Council approved two measures Thursday "that allow the Circuit of The America's racetrack and event venue to apply for state special events incentives." Officials with COTA "had earlier asked the Texas Major Events Reimbursement Program for economic incentives to host two other events: Moto GP motorcycle races and the Summer X Games." In order to qualify for the state funding, COTA "needed the approval of Austin City Council" (Austin BUSINESS JOURNAL, 12/10). ... World Rugby announced that Monaco and Dublin will host the final rugby sevens qualification tournaments for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. With 11 of the 12 teams confirmed for both events, the climax to the global qualification process will deliver the final men's and women's teams. Stade Louis II in Monaco will host the men's tournament on June 18-19, while Dublin's UCD Bowl will host the women's repechage a week later on June 25-26. A total of 16 men's teams will compete in Monaco for the one remaining place for Rio 2016 between Aug. 9-11. They are: Uruguay, Chile, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Russia, Germany, Ireland, Hong Kong, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Tonga, Samoa, Zimbabwe, Morocco and Tunisia. The winner will join Fiji, South Africa, New Zealand, Great Britain, Argentina, U.S., France, Japan, Australia, Kenya and hosts Brazil at Rio 2016 (World Rugby). ... Int’l Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Exec Committee confirmed that Poland will host the 2016 Volleyball World League Finals at a venue to be announced. The five-day Finals featuring the top six teams in the '16 edition of the competition will take place from July 13-17. Twelve teams will play World League Group 1 next year, including the eight teams that took part in '15 (Australia, Brazil, Iran, Italy, Poland, Russia, Serbia and the U.S.), as well as 2015 World League champions France, which began the competition by winning Group 2, and three other teams promoted from Group 2: Argentina, Belgium and Bulgaria (FIVB).
