EPL Side Tottenham's Plans For New Stadium Face Objections From Local Businesses

EPL side Tottenham's plans to build a new £500M ($755M) stadium "are facing objections from a group of local businesses that believe elements of the construction" will be "an act of pure vandalism," according to Alex Miller of the London DAILY MAIL. Spurs revealed updated plans in July to "transform their current home into a new 61,000 all-seater stadium" by '18. A council meeting to "consider the revised stadium plans" will take place on Dec. 16. If the council is "swayed by the protests" and decides against the club, Spurs face the "prospect of their building plans being delayed for several months." The Tottenham Business Group, representing a group of local businesses, "has expressed concerns relating to several issues." These include the demolition of three Victorian and Edwardian heritage buildings to make way for a "wider pavement during the construction process." In addition, they object to plans to the way the club "intends to refurbish another historic building." The group also believes the plans for a bigger stadium, a 23-story hotel and residential blocks half the height of the Shard in London, "will not fit in the area and will deprive neighbours of their right to light." Tottenham did not comment on the Business Group's objection, "but did recently address Historic England concerns," stating, "The Club recognises that the three buildings -- proposed to be removed as a result of the Northumberland Development Project do represent a regrettable loss of heritage assets" (DAILY MAIL, 12/5).
