Public Broadcaster ARD, Pay-TV Channel Sky Renew Broadcast Rights For German Cup

German public broadcaster ARD and pay-TV operator Sky Deutschland "have retained the broadcast rights" to the German Cup (DFB-Pokal) starting with the '16-17 season, according to Marc Schmidt of BILD. The new deals, agreed by the German FA (DFB), are said to be worth around €100M ($106M) per season, representing a marked increase on the €34M ($36M) per season paid by the two broadcasters for the current four-year deal, which started in '11. German free-to-air TV channel RTL "withdrew from the bidding process after the significantly increased offer from ARD and Sky." Meanwhile, ZDF Sports Dir Dieter Gruschwitz said that the public broadcaster "did not participate in the bidding process" (BILD, 11/28).
